A quick few thoughts and I drew a steampunkish pre-war turbine driven racing past. Why didn't we invent levitation and jet propulsion first before the wheel? A cool past makes for cooler future...
Steel-punk? I dunno. I envisioned ramjets, rudimentary centrifugal flow turbojets, piston engine driven compressor jets or even full on steam vent propelled. big dials of script information. pilots wearing G-suits based off brass diving gear. If I had the budget or ability i'd be pitching this to a Japanese studio or graphic novel house. Instead I sit in a hotel waiting to go back to work.

Yeah there's alot of that there. a Lakester and Reno racer from the day. I just took alot of 2nd gen luft'46 style of stuff and the 30's-50's elements and wrapped it into the early 30's knowledge. Look out for the afterburner on the DRS passing zones....
